My Story Got Shortlisted!

I’m so excited!

I recently stepped a little further outside my comfort zone, and submitted a short story to a competition run 4 times a year by Mash Stories. If you haven’t heard of them I suggest that you check them out. They are a friendly bunch of people, and their flash fiction competitions attract quality stories.

The rules are simple: there is a 3 word prompt, and all three words must be used, and the story must not contain more than 500 words.

Stories are assessed as they are submitted, and submissions for this competition are being accepted until April 15th, so if anyone wants to have a go, there is plenty of time. Each story which is shortlisted goes onto the site as soon as possible.

My story got shortlisted!

Just a moment; I would like to say that again!

My story got shortlisted!

In order to qualify for the final, the amount of votes received by a story is taken into consideration. I would be really grateful if you could go over to the website and read my story, and if you like it, vote for it.

A big thank you to all my readers who have sent supportive comments about my work. Although stories like this aren’t necessarily what I am about, you have given me the confidence to risk rejection, and it has paid off, as I was not rejected!

      1. You’ve got me interested now. I had never heard of this competition. I may have to think about writing something and submitting it. It’s probably a little irresponsible on my part, since I have so many jobs waiting for me and so many unfinished works to get back to, but — doggone it — I just can’t seem to pass up a brand new challenge!!!

  2. Well done, Jane. A genuinely lovely story- shame about the end being missed off, but it didn’t feel like it wasn’t a proper ending, if you know what I mean.
I’ve just voted and left a comment on the site too.
Thanks for flagging this comp up- looks like a nice one. Might be tempted to enter myself in the future 🙂

    1. Thank you Lynn. I can see why they ended it where they did. I was really pleased with the closing lines, but I’m not an editor, and they know what they
      are doing.
I think you should try the competition – the Mash team are really helpful. They give feedback whether ot not you get shortlisted, and they made me feel good about my writing.

    1. Thank you Terri. I’d like to say that this is the first competition I have entered, but actually it’s the third. The other two were both rejected because I broke the rules, one because the wordcount on my office programme has forgotten how to count, and I didn’t realise it, and the other one was the previous Mash comp. One of the words I had to include was blow-dryer, and I was so nervous that I put hairdryer instead! They sent me really positive feedback, and said that even though I was disqualified, they would like me to enter again. So I did.

      1. You’re welcome! Congratulations are definitely in order!
I don’t think you should think of those other two submissions as having been rejected… Perhaps think of them as applications that were unfortunate victims of circumstance / technical difficulties 🙂
