A Bitter Victory

anger-18615_640

The government has declared its intention to place a blanket ban on all of the legal highs which are so irresponsibly sold to ignorant victims throughout this country.

dealers
who wilfully
continue to peddle
these lethal powders and pills
will risk seven years
imprisonment

This is our awaited victory
but it will not heal our sick nation
these abominations will still
insidiously spill
through the fingers of criminals
into the pockets
of the un-listening
in search of a chemical thrill
to take away their dissatisfaction
their disenfranchisement
and all of the other
disses that they feel

some of them will die and some will merely become ill.
their skin stick to their bones, or turn grey and wrinkle
some will see strange things which no-one else can see

worms under the skin

secret messages on old receipts

people watching them from rooftops

hidden enemies with weird agendas

some will jump off bridges to their deaths
some will merely cease breathing in their sleep
some will make it to a medical ward before expiring

some
will
survive

A statement by the home office informs us that the Bill’s purpose is: “to protect hard-working citizens from the risks posed by untested, unknown and potentially harmful drugs.”

And it shocks me to see those words so brazenly stated.
are the hardworking citizens the only people of significance?

What of the victims of abuse, of sickness and pain, of mental illness, of this self-righteous government’s callous methods of leadership which ignore the vulnerable?

What of those who have never managed to grab an opportunity because they are weaker than the rest?

And where is your gratitude, you members of parliament, you movers and shakers, you climbers to the top on the of the ladder, you well oiled, well educated, well-to-do upstanding members of the community?

Where is your gratitude, because somebody has to be downtrodden, down-at heel, down and out in this capitalist society in which you thrive, and if it wasn’t them, it could be you.

Your callous wording is another way of inciting the low paid to hate and dispise the unemployed and unemployable.

Those traumatised ex-servicemen
who fought your wars for you
were hardworking citizens before they
ran screaming from their families
to die in the dirt of the streets

Is this bill not intended to help preserve what is left of them?

Or perhaps you think that only ‘respectable’ individuals take legal highs – those smart university students who later graduate to city suits and a middle-class cocaine habit.

  1. Jane I think you should have a weekly column in the Journal. Your writing is so astute and thought provoking..Have you ever tried? See you soon. I will be away for June meeting, but hope all is well with everyone. X

    1. Thanks Gillian- that’s a lovely thing to say. I’d love to write for the Journal, but I wouldn’t know how to approach them. Maybe you could give me some pointers when you get back? I look forward to seeing you in July.

  2. I agree with Ms. Gillian up there! You are hiding your light under a bushel, girl! Maybe it’s time for you to try scratching your way into politics in this area. You are a marvelous writer. I echo your thoughts in this piece.

As to the poem itself, I think I would leave a blank line before
    some
    will
    survive
and maybe even make the words bold so they will stand out. They caught me immediately and could be emphasized more do you think? Or space them differently so the reader’s flow is interrupted
    some
    will
    survive… Just a thought.

      1. I thought that must be the intention. You have to mess around with html for that to work, and I love playing with html.
Maybe I should have another go at visual poetry…

    1. I’m a member of the Green Party, and am considering becoming more active. I stood in the local elections, but I don’t think that it’s where my strength lies. I’m a writer, not a talker.
I knew you would be with me on this one! Thank you a million times.
Asfor the spacing, i think your right, and i love constructive criticism from an intelligent person . I didn’t think about making the words bold, but i like the idea.

    1. thank you Michelle. I felt like saying a lot more, about the fact that if our government was a bit less concerned about gross national profit, and more concerned with dealing with the problem of goss national misery our people would consume less legal highs, but that’s a big subject.

      1. Sigh….it seems that 1st world or 3rd we are all faced with the same problem. Social programs are sorely neglected for the “economic good” not that there can be real prosperity if the human resources are damaged.

        1. It’s crazy… and the progagandists continue to hook people into some weird ‘ideal’. England has just voted capitalism back in. So many people don’t even begin to understand the issues at stake – the Human Rights Bill, the National Health service, Education, Increased poverty, the list goes on…

            1. I got slammed by someone on f***book after the election because I made a remark about “stupid, ignorant and greedy voters”. To be fair, I should have been more careful. I had stood for local council election as a Green Party candidate, and I shouldn’t have said it while standing under that banner – but it’s true. A lot of the people in the poorer areas of town have no idea about the policies of the parties they are voting for. They just pick up on one slogan (probably of the “chuck out asylum seekers” genre – not that that is going to help them) and run with it.
              Grrr…
