Ecocamp train

the leaves are an emerald mural
etched across the sky
a fresh pinch of air pricks the nose
and imparts a thrilling discomfort
giving a single clue
that summer has finished

the finest wild harvest of the year
will soon detach
from the sweet chestnut trees
their chubby-fingered leaves
will crisp and curl
to make a rustling brown game
for children to kick through
but I will not be here to see it

I hear the hoot
of the steam train
as it draws near
hidden from sight
by the bulk of Wild Boar Wood

as it enters the clearing
I wave for one final time
but the season is ended
and the train is empty
except for the engineer and fireman.
the fireman returns my wave
in his regular friendly way

I watch the thick white steam
as it teems from the chimney,
a widening column that thins to grey
and then disappears gradually
long before the train is distanced
into silence

I walk the woodland paths,
running lightly down the stairway I built
as I recall the weight
of each rough timber I placed
so that our guests may climb the hill in safety.

I nod
my silent farewells
to the boggy pit below
and to my fairy glen,
so recently vacated
by those cheery winged figures

I stand with my hand on the car door
facing the the woodland
gazing through the trees,
memorising the scene
that this welcoming vision
may warm me through the winter

next spring
the bluebells
will splash their bright petals
across the wild floor,
the hazel and birch
and their mighty friends
will uncurl fresh baby hands
in sun worship.
the brambles
will redouble their efforts
to smother the tents
and I will return

       the sky with its white
fury, my niece and I were
in different areas of the campsite.
                We ran to the meadow
                   and danced in the
             rain caking our legs
       with mud, laughing
           because we had both
               had the same idea. the
next day the sun gave us
                       its usual golden
                 smile as if nothing
           had happened,
               and it set to

sssshhhh

tread quietly and follow me
I have a treat that you may see
if you believe in secret things
little folk with tiny wings
in trees that reach toward the sky
sitting in the branches high
or from their houses peeping out
whenever good folks are about

now children, here’s the strangest thing
they weren’t here when I moved in
but very soon beneath this tree
where bland bare soil used to be
terraced walls began to grow
and pretty flowers made a show
chairs appeared beneath these roots
and clothes, and little fairy boots

I tried to help them all I could
with useful gifts and dryest wood
for fire to keep them warm at night
in their homes tucked out of sight
I know that these sweet souls so free
had sought me out to comfort me
and if your hearts are kind and true
they’ll surely do the same for you.

Ecocamp tent

.
            the first
           rays of dawn
             seeping
        through cream canvas
            caressing
          my eyelids open
            gave a smile
             to my lips
       I lay still and gazed
   at the dappled golden shadows
   painted onto the thin ceiling
  artwork supplied by kindly trees

I listened to the tweeting birds
     singing of new beginnings

When I beheld that sweet haven

which was to be my home for a while

      behind my rib cage

where my tired heart lay sick

        something fluttered and swelled

and a feeling that healing could reach me

       swept through my senses.

      The trees welcomed me

   their budding leaves opening

to show me the future
